Mountain lions live throughout Arizona, but they’re primarily found in areas with rocky, mountainous terrain. Although they’re stealthy and shy, you might encounter a mountain lion if it feels its young are threatened. According to the Arizona Game and Fish Department, signs of mountain lion presence include large tracks without claw marks, large cylindrical droppings, and food caches where the cat’s kill has been partly eaten before being covered with leaves or dirt. These cats typically weigh 75 to 100 pounds and are characterized by their tan or reddish-brown fur. This one was photographed using a camera trap in the Dos Cabezas Mountains of Southeastern Arizona.
