If you’ve spent any significant amount of time in the Grand Canyon State, odds are you’ve seen a coyote (Canis latrans) or two. Or more. With a widespread range, these canines are Arizona’s most common predator, according to the Arizona Game and Fish Department. Males and females form strong pairs and den in rocky crevices and caves; sometimes, they’ll take over the den of another animal instead. With pointed ears, a narrow nose and black- or white-tipped tails, coyotes are easily distinguishable from dogs and wolves.
