In the summer of 2020, as the world was adjusting to the pandemic, Janet and Greg Kull came across a house for sale in the White Mountains. They aren’t sure why they felt compelled to buy the property, which covers almost 2 acres, but they trusted their gut instincts. Soon after, the couple moved to Pinetop-Lakeside and started working on interior renovations that would continue for the next 18 months. “It’s been a labor of love — every single room has been touched,” Janet says of the Kull White Mountain B&B.

The property dates to March 1925, when it was homesteaded. In the century since, it’s had many uses, including a short time as a bed and breakfast in the 1980s. “We understood that the property, the location and the town were special, and we needed to share that,” Janet says. “So the bed and breakfast was born.”

The B&B has three in-house suites and one detached 600-square-foot building called the Garden Bungalow, which has a full kitchen and a private deck. All of the in-house suites have separate parking and entrances so guests can maintain their privacy. And each room is equipped with modern amenities such as Wi-Fi, an electric fireplace, and coffee and tea from a local roastery. “We try to involve local businesses whenever we can,” Janet says. “The soaps and lotions are made by a local artisan that did the scent just for our B&B.”

In the morning, guests are treated to a full sit-down breakfast in the common area. It’s served at 8:30 a.m., but before that, coffee and pastries are available for early risers. Breakfast usually features an egg dish, baked goods and fresh fruit. And the hosts encourage their guests to sit together and socialize. “Greg and I sit down every morning with our guests,” Janet says. “It’s always interesting to see what people are doing and where they’re going.”

For guests who prefer some solitude, there are several decks around the property and a private sitting area in each room. There’s a hot tub deck, a small gym and a meditation area for those wanting to relax. And the Kulls are happy to provide activity recommendations for anyone new to the area. In fact, Janet says, staying at the B&B is secondary to what the White Mountains have to offer: “I want people to know what exists up here. We’re just a comfortable place to rest your head.”
