The Gila County Sheriff's Office has announced that a man died at the falls on Fossil Creek over the weekend.

The man, 51-year-old Gary Gaytano, was reportedly trying to help his son, who was struggling in the water. He was able to get his son on the shore, but Gaytano slipped underwater. He was pulled from the bottom by family members who tried to save him.

Several law enforcement and emergency management agencies responded to the area where Gaytano was pronounced dead. At this time, the incident is being investigated by the Gila County Sheriff's Office.

While the Fossil Springs Trail from Strawberry has been closed through August, other access points to Fossil Creek from Camp Verde are still open.
